![]() Enemy navy forces soon arrived and were surprised to find the numerically superior French. The French Navy commander detached a small portion of this fleet to land additional troops and to also blockade the occupied seaport. The French now landed a major ground force in the northern part of the country and a French fleet sailed in support from a forwarddeployed location. The indigenous country had no navy of its own to speak of and had sought an arrangement with a major world seapower, France, to remedy this deficiency.įrance had already provided the indigenous forces with combat-experienced ground officers and modern military equipment. The enemy navy was one of the best in the world. The enemy commander anticipated being supported, or if necessary, evacuated by sea. This foreign army held a small seaport from which the commander planned to disrupt lines of communication.
